Hodges Community Center
Hodges Community Center is one of 55 senior centers to undergo renovation last year as a result of a $300,000 grant given to the Alabama Department of Senior Services for senior center energy conservation programs. The Franklin County community center received a $4,400 award. The grant allowed energy-saving measures that helped the center reduce its electricity bill, improve lighting and make the center more comfortable and enjoyable for seniors.

Ceilings were lowered, insulation added, and new lighting was installed throughout the center. “The new lighting has brightened the center. It is now more conducive for recreational activities, such as card games, dominoes and quilting,” Thompson says. “The new ceiling and insulation have resulted in a decrease in the center’s electricity bill. Every dollar saved on electricity is a dollar that could be spent on other activities that seniors enjoy.”
