The Town of Hobson City, Alabama’s oldest minority settlement and one of the oldest African-American towns in the nation, recently built a Senior Citizens Center and Town Library with a $250,000 Community Enhancement Grant from ADECA’s Community Development Block Grant Program. Previously, the Senior Center had been housed in one room in City Hall with no room for activities other than eating the one meal a day provided by the East Alabama Department of Senior Services. Similarly, the Library was housed in one room in City Hall with no room for adequate book storage or even space for reading. About 25 seniors regularly attend the new facility that includes a full kitchen, patio, recreation area, and conference room. Two retired teachers are volunteering to provide the Town’s residents access to a new collection of books and computers due in part to a $25,000 donation from Alabama Power and $30,000 contributed by the Town of Hobson City.
