The Appalachian Regional Commission was created by Congress in 1965 to bring the 13 Appalachian states into the mainstream of the American economy. Alabama's Appalachian region includes the 37 northern-most counties. The usual maximum funding per project is $200,000.00 with ARC funding at either 30%, 50%, or 80% depending on whether a county is listed as competitive, transitional, or distressed. The goal of the program is to create opportunities for self-sustaining economic development and improved quality of life. All projects must meet one of five goals established by ARC. An annual workshop is held in July of each year with pre-applications accepted in the month of August.
