The Local Government Energy Loan Program (LGELP) provides low-cost revolving loans for energy efficiency projects undertaken by local governments in rural areas. Public schools in rural areas are also eligible and are encouraged to participate in this program. Participation in the program results in improvements that pay for themselves through lower utility bills. The interest rate is zero percent for a term up to ten years.
Under the program, towns and cities with a maximum population of 50,000 and county governments with a maximum population of 100,000 may borrow up to $150,000 for energy audits and energy-efficiency improvements or retrofits of buildings and waste water systems. Eligible schools may receive up to $150,000 per campus not to exceed $300,000 per school system.
