Residential
The Residential Energy Code for Alabama (RECA 2004) is based on the 2000 Version of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). RECA meets or exceeds the 2000 version of the IECC except for the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) for glass. RECA 2004 is a voluntary code that allows builders, architects, home designers and code inspectors a simplified method to determine how much insulation to put into the attic, walls and floor, types of windows and doors and their maximum allowed areas, as well as the minimum energy efficiency rating of heating, cooling, and water heating equipment to install.
Commercial
In November 2008 the Alabama Building Commission adopted the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as the mandatory energy code for buildings constructed or remodeled using state funds. Enforcement of the new code began on December 1, 2008. Implementation and enforcement of this code will maximize the energy efficiency of new or renovated state buildings and save Alabama thousands of dollars in energy costs. For information on complying with the 2006 IECC go to www.bc.alabama.gov.
Private commercial construction projects can also benefit from use of this energy code. Building new commercial buildings to the 2006 IECC standard ensures both a comfortable and energy-efficient building with significantly lower operating costs. The Energy Division can assist in providing training for interested stakeholders in the implementation and enforcement of the upgraded code.
Copies of the 2006 IECC can be obtained through the International Code Council at www.iccsafe.org.
