Residential
The Residential Energy Code for Alabama (RECA 2004) is based on the 2000 Version of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). RECA meets or exceeds the 2000 version of the IECC except for the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) for glass. RECA 2004 is a voluntary code that allows builders, architects, home designers and code inspectors a simplified method to determine how much insulation to put into the attic, walls and floor, types of windows and doors and their maximum allowed areas, as well as the minimum energy efficiency rating of heating, cooling, and water heating equipment to install.
Commercial
The Alabama Building Energy Conservation Code (ABECC) is a mandatory building code for state government buildings, administered by the Alabama Building Commission. The latest version of the Code (ABECC 2004), which is based on ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1 – 2001, was adopted in March 2005 and will be implemented by the Alabama Building Commission in September 2005.
Implementation and enforcement of this code will maximize the energy efficiency of new state buildings and save Alabama thousands of dollars in energy costs. Private industry can also benefit through use of this energy code. Building new commercial buildings to the ABECC-2004 standard ensures both a comfortable and energy-efficient building.
